One of the world’s leading generator manufacturers is transitioning to HVO, a fuel that helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil fuels.

Kohler Power Systems EMEA announced earlier this year that its headquarters and production units in Brest, France, have switched their entire diesel engine fuel consumption from conventional diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

Concrete Effects

As an immediate effect, this change will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 750 tons every year. Replacing over 325,000 liters of diesel used annually to power the entire Kohler complex with HVO is a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint: the switch from conventional diesel to HVO reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, depending on the raw materials used in the production of this fuel, which gains recognition every year.

On a large scale, considering the entire system of systems that are sources of carbon emissions, including lighting and air conditioning systems, the transition to this plant-based fuel has reduced the factory and headquarters’ total CO2 emissions by 50% for Kohler Power Systems EMEA.

Used and Tested

The transition to HVO has not only occurred at the level of the overall buildings but also in the testing of generators coming off the production lines. Kohler produces an impressive number of industrial generators in Brest, France, and each one is tested for 24 to 72 hours, during which a significant amount of fuel is burned. In 2023, the transition to HVO in generator testing is expected to create emissions 78% lower than using conventional diesel.

In addition to reducing CO2 emissions, HVO emits less NOx and fewer particles than diesel. HVO is also more stable than fossil diesel, helping Kohler ensure reliable test results, even if the fuel has been in a tank for several months.

HVO and Circular Economy

HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is an alternative fuel produced by hydrogenating vegetable oils or animal fats. This hydrotreating process removes impurities and alters the molecular structure of the oil or fat, resulting in a product similar to traditional diesel.

It possesses all the advantages of a sustainable fuel, unlike biodiesel. Being insensitive to oxidation, HVO can be stored for the long term.

HVO is carbon-neutral up to 90%, entirely sourced from waste, making it part of the circular economy.

Diesel Generators Compatible with HVO

The entire Kohler range of industrial diesel generators is compatible with HVO, and the transition from fossil diesel to this fuel is quick and easy. No modifications are required for already installed generators, allowing immediate use of renewable fuel for customers. The similarity between HVO and diesel is so significant that both can be used simultaneously, blended, further facilitating the adoption of the new type of fuel.
